My wife and I are trying to figure out where to go for our next vacation. We agreed on the Southeast Asia region but just cannot pick the exact country. My wife is really leaning toward Thailand right now. I am thinking the Philippines is the better choice. Thailand is just way too overhyped these days. The Philippines seems a lot less explored and much more interesting. We always love exploring different countries completely on our own. How is the car rental situation in that country? I want to know if it is easy to find a ride and just drive around the islands.

Couples always struggle to pick the perfect vacation spot. You guys at least nailed the region. The Philippines gives you a much better chance to actually see some untouched nature compared to Thailand. The car rental scene there is completely different from Europe or the US. Most people actually rent scooters or hire a local driver because the traffic rules are practically non-existent. Tourists who really want their own car usually have to scour local Facebook groups or ask their hotel front desk to hook them up with an owner.

The Philippines is genuinely one of those places where the less touristy vibe is exactly what makes it worth it, and your wife might come around once she sees what’s actually there versus what Thailand has turned into. Getting around on your own is a big part of that experience too. You can rent a car in Philippines here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/philippines . You pick your vehicle, sort everything out in advance, and you’re not dependent on whoever the hotel happens to know. Way more flexibility when you’re trying to actually explore rather than just hit the obvious spots.
